The Voice of a Civil Right Activist: I Couldn't Settle For Less

Segun Sega Awosanya is a Nigerian civil rights activist known for lending his voice to help the minorities. He went on Twitter to inspire lives; hence, explain the struggles he encountered on his journey to becoming a success.

Sega actively leads the successful #Endsars campaign. He is an alumnus of the prestigious University of Lagos and presently runs a PhD program in Sustainability in the University of Surrey, UK.

Sega understands the struggles the average Nigerian child has to go through to have a good life and over the years he has contributed his quota to youth development in the county.

He took to social media to inspire youths on how he overcame rejection and inferiority on his journey to becoming the who he is today, In his words:

While growing up, my mum kept saying I was going to be a Mechanic (odd one out) just because I have a different perspective to life at a very early age, I always smile and say Maybe (If it is His Will). I was treated differently but I saw uniqueness & never played the victim. On Christmas Days when my peers flaunt their wears & spoils of entitlement, I usually appear in the very same old combination of years that I have maintained in pristine condition. They felt bad for me but I’ve always known it’s a sign of something greater.

While waiting for admission and it took almost 4 years with parents of my colleagues saying “that’s too bad” “why not settle for less or take the offerings instead of insisting on a particular course?” I kept saying, His will alone be done".

"I was perceived as a little mad boy by many but I found a company within myself. I was celebrated in the Church for my uncanny creativity. I played the drums, organ and trumpet & was celebrated in the Boys’ Brigade (21st Ikeja company) even up to the State level due to my creativity. But at home, I was just a Mechanic in the making".

"There were many strange events; denials, rejections, misinterpretations and assumptions but I never lost sight of who I am in God. He was/is my only friend & companion. One who never ridicules scorns or mocks. I kept saying my failure will be His failure because I trust no one and this explains why your praises, accolades, abuses, blackmail, assumptions, presumptions, prejudices, hate & speculations have nothing on me".

I appreciate the positives & I file the rest under advisement. The entire course of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity and it is really impossible to tell prima facie (precisely) whether anything that happens in it is either good or bad… “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” James 1:2-3

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, “wanting nothing.” If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” James 1:4-5

This is why anyone, group or powers that be that come against this character will continue to fail. The battle is not mine and has never been mine…the Battle is the Lord’s and the Victory is for His Glory towards the establishment of His Government (Kingdom) on Earth.

I’ve since learnt that nobody is superior or inferior & nobody is equal or can ever be. We are all unique, incomparable and magical. You are you and I am Me. The fight for equality by itself is a farce. But before the law, it is about Equity, Fairness & Justice.”

Today we shared this piece for you to understand that what people do or say don’t really matter if you must be a success, it should fuel your motivation to achieve your goals faster.
