Senate Approves Independent Candidature for Elections – Rejects Devolution of Powers
By ChiDubem Michael
Nigerian Senate, today
Wednesday approved independent candidature for the country’s electoral process.
The approval was part of the ongoing amendment of 1999 constitution.
It was only political
parties could sponsor candidates for election in the country previously. Perhaps,
with this development, it means that candidates aspiring for elective post can
vie without joining a political party.
However, the amendment
had sought to move certain items to the concurrent legislative list to give
more powers to the States.
During the electronic voting on the amendment of the constitution, 46 senators voted in favour of the proposal, while 48 senators voted against and 1 abstained.
