That mistakes are not bad or negative on its own is an excuse to fall peril of making one all the time; and then justify your mistakes. So when you make a mistake
it’s important that you don’t fall into the trap of trying to justify your
mistake. Mistakes should be embraced not justified or rationalized. Until you
take ownership of your mistakes, you'll never truly learn the lessons you ought master to help you move forward in life.
It is dangerous; very dangerous to
ignore any mistakes you make. Your mistakes are like sign-posts that help direct and navigate you in the right direction. When you ignore these sign-posts, you're no doubt going to risk getting side-tracked. Hence, the longer it takes you to realize this, the more
effort you'll eventually invest to get yourself back on the right track in the
future.
On the surface mistakes
don’t feel good; but beyond the surface lays values. Maybe growing up, you were taught that mistakes were bad. Then as an adult you must never indulge in self-pity or be feeling regretful
that you made a mistake. Such behavior and attitude is never helpful, and will only
hurt your growth and development in the long-term. Thus, when you make a
mistake, it’s critical that you refrain from blaming others or yourself for the mistake. All you need do is to just take responsibility for it. Do something about
it, learn from it, and move on.
Furthermore, realize that
you'll be absolutely wasting your time if you start complaining about your
mistake or making excuses for it. That is defensive-minded behavior. Though is natural for
most people; it should not be natural for you. So quit complaining or making
excuses. Rather, gain yourself feedback about the mistake and make observations that will help you learn from the experience to improve your
decisions and actions in the future. Don't make a mistake without learning from it.
Mistakes should
immediately indicate to you that something went wrong. As a result you ought be
ready and prepared to deal with the situation. Most importantly you
ought be ready to learn from the situation in order to improve your choices,
decisions and actions in the future. Follow the four step process below, to thoroughly learn from the mistakes you make:
- Shift your perspective
- Explore what went wrong
- Develop plan of action
- Identify skills and resources
