When Junaid Salamah a 500 level MBBS student of the University of Lagos, Nigeria joined the University Press
Club, she wanted her first article to be perfect, without a single flaw, unique
and extra ordinary. She would scrutinize
everything has written. She would turn it over and over and eventually toss it out because it
wasn’t good enough for her first article. To her, it didn’t have that spark she was
looking for. So she kept searching and would found nothing. Her pessimistic mind kept
telling her maybe she just wasn’t good enough to write.
Many at times, we're like Junaid. Thus we keep feeling inadequate for some tasks and responsibilities. Consequently we keep saying to ourselves that
we're imperfect for the roles we play or would need to play. More than often we feel that we're
not enough, and hence would do nothing until there is a helping hand. Often than not the
inadequacies we feel is due to previous failure. Some other times, it is
usually because the person or people whose approval we need do not oblige us. Therefore we feel we're just not good enough. Apparently we create standards; very high
standards for ourselves, that if we achieve anything less, we fight ourselves,
we worry, we cry and we feel not enough.
Many of us ends up trying harder
to prove they worth to themselves and to the people they respect, to show them that they're not worthless. Unfortunately in the process they end up feeling more worthless, empty
and not good enough. The vicious cycle begins again, and continues. It drains up
mentally, physically and socially; right? Of course, it does. Consequently, it leads
to the spirit of quitting and giving-up because you feel that you're not good
enough. You quit because you aren’t part of the best. You feel inadequate because someone you expect
to praise us did not see reason to. Even when you can clearly hear the crowd
chanting your praise, you feel not good enough because you tell yourself, despite the preparations you'll still lose. Even when you had your personal best, you feel terrible because you're slow to getting it.
Why do you place so much focus
on external competition instead of try win yourself. The pressure to impress is the bigger problem you have here. Is killing your self-confidence and makes you feel inadequate, it poisons our strength and ability to do
better. You don’t even get close to good because you don’t try again. You have given-up. Take a moment and focus. Have you tried to find out why you aren't succeeding? Why not think of yourself as your competitor? Why not try to be the best of you because
there is a lot the better you can offer? You don’t
need to be good enough for anyone or anything, you just need to be better
enough for you.
You're focused on
being the first in the race, so when you're not then we declare ourselves
terrible and inadequate. Not good enough, and so on that
we begin to describe ourselves with or without realizing we won our old us, we
“bettered” our own good. A lot is worse than failing; not trying at all is, and
quitting is, because you never can tell how close you're to getting it good or best out of the good. Most times, we're
already defeated before the real defeat comes. We have told ourselves severally
why it won’t work, why it will fail, that we are not as good as others. But the
mind is powerful. Equip it well and you will unleash the strength of the body.
You're good enough. You're adequate, powerful and full of energy. You're beautiful and handsome. You're good enough, and don’t have to go all the way to prove this to anybody. You don’t have to quit because you
don’t know whether you're good enough. There’s seed of greatness in you. Just grow it; water
your better and harvest your best. Remember that seeds do not grow in a day, so
in order to harvest, you have to go through the process, practice and practice
until even your mind celebrates your greatness.
Competition is
inevitable fact of life. It is a characteristic of living things. Hence, the first competitor you'll witness in life is you. Yourself, not Mr A or Mr B. Fight to be a better you. Strive to improve, so every day
you win your former self and every time you win, you feel and you know, that
you are certainly Good enough.
