CleanEdge Solution an NGO based in Nigeria, located at the University Teaching Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, on September 22 called for volunteers for "Save The Environment Campaign", out of the need to address Oyo State most pressing issue - the environment.
With the efforts and service of the volunteers, and the pilot phase of the sensitisation campaign held at Methodist Grammar
School Bodija, Ibadan on 4th of October 2017, the NGO targets to reach over 120
secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria.
Apparently, Nwoye Chidubem Michael and friends, among other volunteers has since the commencement of the campaign going to different secondary schools in the state sensitising students on the need for proper and good environmental management to ensure safe and healthy environment for present and future generation.
Hence, regarding the effects of Climate change and depletion of ozone layer which has no respect for border, race or colour; environmental
education will no doubt play a pivotal role in keeping safe. Therefore, CeanEdge Solution with the volunteers seek to achieve that focusing secondary school students.
Highlight of the Campaign;
Environment
This is the surroundings or condition in which a person, animal or plant
lives or operate. It also refers to the sum total of all surroundings of living organism
which provide condition for growth and development as well as of danger and
damage. We get water, air, food, clothing, power etc. from the environment
How we affect
the environment negatively
There are several ways, but for this training, we
will limit it to:
- Pollution which could harm or pose a threat to air, water bodies, soil etc. through introduction to the environment a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects.
- Deforestation which is the cutting of trees in the name of expansion and urbanization.
- Excess usage of commodity; we use many commodities out of fancy.
- Overloading the land with fertilizers, overgrazing and shifting agriculture degrade land, creating soil erosion that leads to silting in major rivers and reservoirs.
- For a healthy living: the more we don’t care about environment, the more it get polluted with contaminant and toxins which have harmful impacts on our health. Viruses, bacteria infections, malaria and tuberculosis are all example of biological hazards.
- The overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere is increasing: global warming is causing climate pattern to change and the weather is getting hotter. So, for the sake of our children and our future, you and I must change the way we hurt the climate. We must stop open burning, open defecation, indiscriminate cutting of trees, sporadic and unconscious refuse disposal.
- Your great-great and great-great-great grandchildren will appreciate it: isn’t it good that our forefathers lived and we could inherit the planet from them? If we don’t change our attitude, our children may have nothing to inherit from us or they might inherit an inhabitable world.
- Biodiversity is important: biodiversity means variety of plants, animals and other living things in our world, we must preserve them. The destruction of rainforest causes erosion, loss of valuable species and changes in climate. With more plants, trees and animals, the soils improve and become less prone to erosion, drought and flooding.
- We need environment for survival: so that we can continue to have what to eat, drink, breathe good air, a place to sleep and because nature is beautiful and awesome
- Create a compost heap in your garden to recycle food waste and other biodegradable materials.
- Don’t burn waste as it can cause respiratory problems.
- Plant a tree. Trees absorb carbondioxide, a greenhouse gas.
- Avoid dumping refuse in streams and water ways as it can leads to water bodies, thereby polluting it.
- Turn off your devices: when you don’t use a house device such as TV, turn it off. Turn off the light when you leave the room. This conserves energy and lower peak demands on utility plants.
- Use rechargeable batteries as they produce less waste because they use less energy and can be recharged with a simple battery charger and reused hundreds of times.
- Don’t pour chemical and waste oil on the ground or into drains leading to bodies of water.
- Reduce creating waste: The next time you use the waste-bin bag, take a look inside it. Is there anything that could have not ended up there?
The state of the environment is one of the most pressing issues of our time. You can make an important impact with small changes. Even though you are just one man, other guys are sure to take note of your good actions, resulting in a domino effect that will magnify the benefit of your behaviour. Don’t postpone it, start now!
